Originally a summer home for local Indian tribes, Garrett County is now known as Maryland’s mountaintop playground, boasting the largest selection of adventure sports in the state. The Wisp Ski Resort, touted for the “best snowmaking in the east,” is Maryland’s only alpine ski area. Rising to some 3,080 feet with a 610-foot vertical drop, Wisp provides a challenge for the expert while also sporting terrain more suitable for the beginner. The winter season also lures ice climbers, snowboarders and cross-country skiers to the area. But there is adventure for every season whether it be caving, white water rafting, reppelling, horseback riding, sky diving, fly fishing, mountain biking, scuba diving, sailing or windsurfing. Also don’t miss some of Garrett County’s famous historical sites such as the B&O Railroad Station in Oakland, one of the oldest stations in the country, and the Casselman River Bridge, at one time the largest single span stone arch bridge in the United States. The Church of the Presidents in Oakland, frequented by Presidents Grant, Harrison and Cleveland, is another must-visit. Garrett County forms the northwestern edge of Maryland and is located 171 miles from Washington, D.C.
